Unfortunately the established "out of the box" automation options like "zero touch provisioning" techniques that some vendors offer, or new DevOps techniques like Ansible, Chef, Salt or Puppet may be fine in well documented and fully equipped Data Centres, but don’t work in reality on the massive scales that large geographically distributed businesses require. For Enterprise deployments what is required is scripting (highly customised software programs written in Bash Shell Script, Python and Expect), together with corresponding human processes that keep everything simple and possible on a massive scale, and can cope with the real world practical and logistical problems and challenges that occur when the goal is the deployment of 100s of sites per day.
